In 1985, Friedhelm Hillebrand of Bonn, Germany and a dozen others had been laying out the plans to standardize a technology that would allow cellphones to transmit and display text messages. Because of tight bandwidth constraints of the wireless networks at the time, each message would have to be as short as possible.

Hillebrand has conducted an informal study using his typewriter on how many characters are required on an average to express a sentence or question, by typing out random sentences and questions on a sheet of paper. He counted the number of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and spaces on the page, and came to a conclusion that each blurb ran on for a line or two and nearly always clocked in under 160 characters. That became the magic number which set the standard for one of text messaging.

Friedhelm Hillebrand was the chairman of the nonvoice services committee within the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). He pushed forward the group’s plans in 1986 and all the cellular carriers and mobile phones must support the short messaging service (SMS).

The committee took the assumption based on other two factors: For one, they found that postcards often contained fewer than 150 characters. Second, they analyzed a set of messages sent through Telex, a then-prevalent telegraphy network for business professionals. Despite not having a technical limitation, Telex transmissions were usually about the same length as postcards. The committee finally decided on the 160 character length for text messages.

Identify and Search for Songs or Music Using Lyrics and Sound Recognition

I have a lot of interest in music and what a disc jockey does. Few years back I bought 2 units of Pioneer CDJ-1000MK2 and a DJM-600 so I can play, scratch and mix musics but due to other more important commitment in my life, I can no longer afford to spend extra time in that area. That’s why you can find a Music category which I have no update for a very very long time. One of the most important thing in wanting to be a DJ is to know a lot of songs. It will be very tough for beginners because they don’t even know where to start and most of the time they can’t tell what song is being played in a club. Searching for the title or artist for an unknown song that you hear on the radio or at a party can be hard but thanks to computer, it’s not so difficult anymore.

The easiest way to search for the song is to remember the lyrics. Even a short sentence of lyrics will do. The best is to remember 2 or more sentence because there are times the lyrics are pretty similar. One of our forum member Stuge recorded a short audio clip and asked for help in identifying that song. It wasn’t tough because I can clearly hear 2 sentence of the song. With the help of Google, I got to know what is the title and artist of the song.

If there are no lyrics and only music like Electro, Techno and House genre, it is also possible to find the artist and title of the music.

Here’s how easy it is to search for a song with lyrics. The audio clip that Stuge provided has the lyrics “You got lucky babe, you got lucky, I found you”. All I needed to do is to type this in Google search box “you got lucky babe you got lucky i found you lyrics”. Take note of the “lyrics” that I added at the end of the search key.

Voila, the title of the song is You Got Lucky, sung by Tom Petty. If you can’t hear the lyrics but can remember the tune or beat, you can try more methods below.

1. Midomi

You can search for music by singing, humming or even whistling. You don’t need to download any software to use Midomi, all you need is a web browser with flash player, a mic and an internet connection. To use midomi to find your music, click the “Click and Sing or Hum” at the top of the page, then click Allow when you see the warning that www.midomi.com is requesting to access your camera and microphone. Start singing, humming or whistling. Once you’re done, click Stop and it’ll automatically upload the recorded audio from you to search for the song. During testing, I sang Wonderful Tonight by Eric Claptop, and Midomi is able to recognize it.

2. Tunatic

Tunatic claims to hear the song and you will get the artist’s name and the song’s title within seconds. Tunatic is the very first song search engine based on sound for your computer. All you need is a microphone and Internet access. Tunatic can’t identify music from classical genre and also song sung/hum by you. It has to be a recorded music. I’ve tested Tunatic to see if it can identify the song Close To You sung by The Carpenters but it couldn’t. Maybe you’ll have better luck with it…

Both Midomi and Tunatic relies on database to identify unknown songs, so it is not perfect. If all method fails, your only chance is to post the audio clip in DJ forums.

Create Kaspersky Update Server Mirror for Offline Updates

One thing I don’t like about Kaspersky product is after installing, it takes a very long time to fully update the program modules and bases files. Currently if you do a fresh installation of the latest version of Kaspersky 8.0.0.506, you’ll still need to download around 18MB. It’s not big but the problem is Kaspersky update servers are painfully slow… Combined with my customer’s place where the internet speed is crawling like a snail, I can never get to update Kaspersky to use the latest program modules and bases. It’s pointless having one of the best antivirus installed on the computer but without updating it.

Fortunately Kaspersky has came up with a very useful official tool that is able to create a “mirror” of the Kaspersky Lab’s update servers. This is very useful when you are like me who runs around installing Kaspersky products on other people’s computer. You can also use this if you have a few Kaspersky product installed in your network and you want all of the computers to update locally instead of individually downloading from Kaspersky and wasting your bandwidth. Most of the time this can only be done on “enterprise/corporate” version of the software but now you can also do it on desktop version.

Basically this tool is called Kaspersky Updater and is able to automatically download latest anti-virus bases and application program modules for all Kaspersky applications. For my case, I save the downloaded files in my USB flash drive, install Kaspersky software, and configure it to grab the updates from my USB flash drive.

If you want your computers in your network to grab the latest definition from a local server, then all you need to do is to share the “Updates” folder and configure Kaspersky to get it from the folder that you just shared. Best part is Kaspersky Updater supports scheduled updates so it can run automatically without you checking on it all the time.

There are 2 parts that in the whole process that is to run Kaspersky Updater to download latest bases and modules and finally configure the computer to grab the updates locally. Here are the steps on how to use Kaspersky Updater.

1. Download the latest version of Kaspersky Updater GUI from official Kaspersky forum. You will need to sign up in order to download. The official stable version of GUI is v1.0.3.30 but I prefer to use v2.1.0.15 Beta because it has Schedule feature.

2. Download the latest version of Update Utility. Extract both GUI and Updater and make sure they are in the same directory.

3. Run KasperskyUpdater.exe.

4. Select “Download databases for the selected products” and check the boxes according to which version of base that you want to download. Click Apply then Start and it will start to download. First time will take quite a while to complete downloading but after that it should only a few seconds because it supports incremental updates.

Optional: If you want to schedule Kaspersky Updater to automatically download the latest bases, then click the Schedule button, and choose whether to you want it to run automatically every few hours, days or weeks. Click Apply. For some weird reasons I am getting an error “not a valid date and time”. Well it’s still in beta and hopefully they’ll fix this bug.

Now you’ll have to configure Kaspersky software to grab the updates from your USB flash drive or from the shared folder. Click Settings > click Update on the left pane > Click the Settings button > click Add, browse the location of the Updates folder and click OK > Uncheck Kaspersky Lab’s update servers > and click OK to close the update settings window. You can refer to the animation below on how to do that.

First time updating directly from Kaspersky Lab’s online update server takes about more than an hour but when done locally, it takes less than a minute to download 18MB of updates!

I highly recommend every tech people to have a copy of Kaspersky Updater with latest bases and modules with them all the time.

Fix Video Playback Problems by Removing Bad Codecs

Codecs are important because they are being used to compress the videos and audios into much smaller size. Compressing a video with different codec will give you different results in terms of quality of the video and also the file size. If a video is being compressed by DivX, we’ll need DivX codec to play the video or else we will only hear the audio being played but no video. There are a lot of codecs and the best way to make sure that you can watch many types of videos is by installing codec packs. Codec packs are a collection of codecs being packed into one installer and is configured by default not to have any conflicts.

There are a lot of codec packs nowadays such as K-Lite Codec Pack, XP Codec Pack, Codec Pack All in 1, Matroska Pack, Satsuki Decoder Pack, The Codec, Combined Community Codec Pack and etc… I have no idea which one is the best but I’ve been using K-Lite Codec Pack for many years now and seldom have any problems with it. The important thing is I make sure that I do not uninstall nor upgrade to the latest version because I read that you’ll start to encounter weird video playback problems after doing that.

If you have codec problems, here is something you can try first before uninstalling and reinstalling the codec pack.

Here are two tools that is able to fix some broken codecs on your Windows computer. These tools are a little old but it works.

1. Filmerit

Filmerit is a freeware application for cleaning and managing the DirectShow filters. Directshow is a very nice concept that Microsoft introduced in DirectX. Many useful filters are delivered originally with DirectX, but each application may install its proper filters, eventually replacing some original ones, and finally this process may create conflicts, and in some extreme cases block all multimedia applications.

2. Codec-Sniper

Codec Sniper is a simple, small and easy-to-use tool that will show all of the Directshow, video and audio codecs on your computer. Codec-Sniper also features a column in which you may see whether the codec is “OK”, or “Broken”. This smart application also allows you to delete any codecs that you know are old or that you don’t need.

I am going to stress again that codecs are very sensitive and don’t mess around with them when they are working perfectly fine. Both Codec-Sniper and Filmerit should only be used when you encounter problems in video playback. Both tools are portable and free, so they are going in to my USB flash drive when I go out to service computers

Analyze Suspicious EXE Files with Comodo Instant Malware Analysis

These free services can analyze what the file can actually do you your computer when you run it and you don’t need to risk your computer from being harmed. Even after my laptop being infected by virus twice, I am still running Windows without an antivirus because I always check a file that I think suspicious with ThreatExpert.

Here’s another online sandbox service by Comodo called CIMA, Comodo Instant Malware Analysis. CIMA is built as service in the cloud (fancy way of saying online service) where you can upload your suspicious files and it will get analyzed in real time and a report will be generated for your review. In this report it will tell you if it is suspicious or not. This tool is originally used in Comodo antivirus labs to help them identify malwares and they’ve decided to make it available to all of us for FREE!

All you need to do is to visit CIMA, and browse the file that you want to analyze. Once the file has finished uploaded, you’ll be forwarded to a page that refreshes every 5 seconds until the report is ready. I tried uploading a 70KB trojan that is widely detected by all antivirus, it took about 5 minutes to produce the report.

The report contains a lot of information such as HTTP queries, DNS queries, Windows Api Calls, Threads Created, Process created and terminated, Drivers loaded and unloaded, Hidden files, Files and directory created, changed and deleted, Registry keys and values created, changed and deleted. Finally, at the end of the report, CIMA will give you a verdict if the file is suspicious or not.

There are constant improvements going on this service to adapt to new emerging threats. Do take note that anything you submit to CIMA, it gets fed to their AV labs. Any suspicious file will be then be manually analyzed and if found to be malicious, a signature will be created and Comodo Antivirus will be updated in the next signature update.

Batch Extract Multiple RAR Archives Using Password List

Previously xje4bv has shared with us 5 free tools to automatically extract multiple zip or rar archives. They are Unpacker, RARZombie, ExtractNow, The Scene Release Unpacker and Scene Unpacker (1.0.0.1). We’re not talking about software to manage zip archives such as 7-Zip or Universal Extractor but rather a simple portable tool that is able extract multiple archive files. For example, if you’ve downloaded many different types of files that is compressed into ZIP or RAR, extracting one by one is going to be a tedious task.

Other than the 5 tools that xje4bv shared with us, there are 6 more free tools that can handle extracting multiple compressed files. They are BulkExtractor, AutoUnpack, ParNRar, ZipALot, UnZipThemAll and QuickZip4. I’ve tested all 11 of them and I am not going to go into details because not even one out of the 11 that satisfies my requirement in batch extracting archive files. To me, a tool to extract multiple zip or rar archives MUST support password because there are a lot of sites that encrypts the archive with password so that people would know where the file originally came from. Or it can be a form of advertisement when another site leeched the download link.

Out of the 11 free batch extracting tools, only a few that can support password. For some, you can set the password in the settings so that it will try to extract with the predefined password and some will prompt you to enter the password when it finds out that the archive is encrypted with a password.

Unfortunately not even ONE can support entering multiple passwords or a password list. A lot of times I just download what I think it’s interesting but never had the time to immediately check the file. So I ended up accumulating a bunch of compressed files with different passwords and I got even lazier to check them out because I knew I had to extract one by one which will take a lot of my time doing just that.

Ah, good news is I found that jDownloader, a very good one-click file hosting downloader tool that is able to handle extracting multiple RAR archive files WITH a password list! I am going to show you how easy it is to extract multiple RAR archives using jDownloader.

1. Make sure your computer have at least Java Runtime Environment v1.5 installed. You can go here to verify the version of Java that is installed on your PC.

2. Download the latest version of jDownloader. If you already have it on your computer, it has an auto update feature to make sure you have the latest version of the program and addons.

3. Extract the downloaded jDownloader and run JDownloader.exe. It should take a few seconds to load and this is normal because it runs on Java.

4. Click Addons in menu bar and go to JD-Unrar > Settings. Go through all the settings there and also enter all the password that you want JD-Unrar to try to extract when it finds a RAR file passworded. Click OK when done.

5. Now again click Addons in the menu bar and go to JD-Unrar > Extract archive(s).

6. Select all the RAR files in a folder (make sure you move all your RAR files that you want to extract in a folder first) and click Open.

7. jDownloader will now extract all your RAR files that you selected and also automatically tries the list of password. If the password is not found, it can prompt you to manually enter the password. It is like brute forcing an encrypted RAR file. Do take note that if you have a long list of password, the extraction time can take very long.

jDownloader is free, portable and is very actively being developed but unfortunately JD-Unrar can only support RAR archive. I know the main coder of jDownloader and will make a request for him to add ZIP support in JD-Unrar. When that happens, it will be the perfect archive batch extracting tool!

Auto Download Multiple Parts from RapidShare using Firefox While You Are Sleeping

Manually downloading from RapidShare as a free user is a pain. Click this, wait, and click that, wait. When finished downloading the first part, go back to the clicking and waiting game. Fortunately there are many ways to automate downloading from RapidShare. You can either use a download manager that is meant to download from one-click hosters such as jDownloader, CryptLoad, or if you have a website with a lot of bandwidth, you can install RapidLeech script to make your server get the file from RapidShare and you can download from your server. I used jDownloader a lot in the past but have stopped using it because I always get very slow download speed even with my premium account. So now I am using RapidLeech to make my server hosted locally in Malaysia the middle man to grab all the files from RapidShare at a very fast speed. Then I can download from my server at full speed.

Today I will be covering another method on how to automate downloading from RapidShare as a free user using Firefox web browser! All you need to do is to open all rapidshare links in the Firefox tabs and go do something else. If you don’t like using jDownloader because it needs Java, Cryptload because it needs .NET framework, or you don’t have a website, then give this a try.

First method is to use an add-on called SkipScreen. It is a free Firefox add-on that lets you skip all the clicking and waiting on sites like RapidShare, Zshare, MegaUpload, and Sharebee. Your downloads start instantly. All you need to do is to install the add-on, and open all the rapidshare links on a new tab. You will notice that SkipScreen tries to download all of the links but only 1 will get through and the rest will say that you are already downloading a file. Once the first file has finished downloading, SkipScreen will automatically starts to download the other parts…

Second method is to use a Greasemonkey script called RapidShare AutoWait. This script only works on RapidShare and it even hides the advertisements in RapidShare. First make sure you have Greasemonkey add-on installed, then click here to install the RapidShare AutoWait script.

Both methods above will still need to wait all those timeouts and countdowns, but you won’t have to sit in front of your computer to do that. During testing, I found that RapidShare AutoWait works better than SkipScreen. When I canceled the first download, RapidShare AutoWait is able to automatically download the second part from RapidShare. It continues until all the rapidshare links has been downloaded. As for SkipScreen, when I canceled the first download, it doesn’t download the second part. I’ve tested three times and it failed all.

If you did not set Firefox to auto save the downloaded files, you will get full of download windows asking you where you’d like to save your files. Do take note that the files has finished downloading, so all you need to do is to just save it. If you don’t want all that annoying windows, just set the default location where Firefox should save your downloaded files.

Ah Internet Explorer, probably the most hated web browser for Firefox users. But no matter what, we still need them because it is a part of Windows and some functions depends on IE’s configuration. Once IE starts to go bonkers, you can expect some really weird problems appearing on your computer. Based on the web statistic software for this website, IE has always been the highest percentage being used to access this site but for the past few months, I am actually seeing Firefox overtaking Internet Explorer by a few percent. Although it’s not much, but it is possible that Firefox will have a huge lead in future.
